As in a Sherlock Holmes short story, it was the little details that made it so compelling: Heather Mills McCartney’s spectacularly hideous self-designed trouser-suit, a patchwork of beige, blue, bright red and green; the judge’s gloomy calculation that, when Beatrice leaves university, her mother will be 58 years old and her father 83; the fact that Heather is, according to her submission, “currently undertaking a part-time course at UCL in nutrition”, and her claim for an annual holiday expenditure of £499,000, plus £39,000 for wine, even though, as the judge pointed out in witty parenthesis “(she does not drink alcohol)”.
