Marianne Faithfull’s career as an actor began with playing Ophelia to Nicol Williamson’s “Hamlet.” Her boyfriend of the time, Mick Jagger, reportedly attended every performance. She later appeared with Jagger in Kenneth Anger’s “Lucifer Rising” and had a hit with a cover of his song, “As Tears Go By.”
In the 1980s she released one of rock’s seminal albums, “Broken English,” the candor of which made her a feminist heroine. She has recently appeared in several films, including “Marie Antoinette” and “Paris je t’aime.” Her newest is “Irina Palm,” in which she plays a middle-age frump who takes a temporary job in the sex industry to raise money for her grandson’s medical care. It opens Friday for a one-week run at the Varsity.
