No fooling: Avril’s a lean, Lavigne pink-rock machine

April 9th, 2008 admin

Avril Lavigne

Despite the skull and crossbones, is a good role model.

Now 23, she promotes girl power by delivering marginal attitude mixed with a refreshing brand of femininity that doesn’t require a bare midriff.

She writes songs like “Don’t Tell Me,” about actually not sleeping with a boy who wants to hop in the sack.

And she delivers a solid if not spectacular live show that is edgy enough to keep teen girls engaged, but not edgy enough to embarrass their chaperone fathers.

Plus, her skull-and-crossbones trademark is placed inside a pretty pink heart.

Tuesday night at Boston University’s Agganis Arena, Lavigne showcased both the sweet and the sassy in an 80-minute set that was heavy on backup dancers, ballads, black eyeliner and the color pink.

Hot topics — Avril Lavigne review: Best Damn Show? Not even close

March 18th, 2008 admin

Avril Lavigne

VICTORIA - Say a prayer for all the brothers, boyfriends, and fathers in the audience Wednesday night because the concert was one for the girls.

Me not being one shouldn’t have been a problem. For the most part, I like Lavigne’s music and have taken it upon myself to argue the point repeatedly to the non-fans who will listen.

Avril Lavigne: Better late than never

March 18th, 2008 admin

Avril Lavigne

In her native Canada, is a big star. The 23-year-old punk-popster competes with for Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammys), and the press gossips about her life (she’s not pregnant) and a recent lawsuit over songwriting credits (she settled out of court after being accused of cribbing “Girlfriend” from the Rubinoos’ 1979 tune “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”).

“Girlfriend” was a huge hit; in fact, it was named the top download of 2007 by International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Now she’s finally getting around to touring behind “Girlfriend” and her third consecutive No. 1 album, “Best Damn Thing.”

Question: “Best Damn Thing” came out last April. Do you have any second thoughts about not going on tour right away and keeping fans waiting for almost a year?

Answer: I think it could have gone either way. I think it probably didn’t really matter that much. You always have to do promo (promotion). I did promo all of 2007, I had to go to so many different places, including Asia, Europe and South America. I had a lot of places to go, a lot of TV shows to do, and a lot of shoots and all that stuff. It has to be done if you want to work a record really hard, and I chose to work this one hard.
