TORONTO — ’s catty hit single, “Girlfriend,” has been turned into a 92-page comic book.

Titled “’s Girlfriend: Sleight of Hand and Heart,” the comic tells the story of the sweet boy Dylan, his superficial girlfriend Layla and the misfit Marta who knows there’s a secret darkside to Layla.

Lavigne’s MySpace page says the tale is inspired by last summer’s hit single, “Girlfriend,” in which the boppy refrain declares, “Hey, hey, you, you, I don’t like your girlfriend/ No way, no way, I think you need a new one.”

The comic is available at Lavigne’s concerts and online at avrilmerch.com.

Lavigne is in the midst of a world tour that started in Vancouver last week.

Avril Lavigne

In her native Canada, is a big star. The 23-year-old punk-popster competes with for Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammys), and the press gossips about her life (she’s not pregnant) and a recent lawsuit over songwriting credits (she settled out of court after being accused of cribbing “Girlfriend” from the Rubinoos’ 1979 tune “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”).

“Girlfriend” was a huge hit; in fact, it was named the top download of 2007 by International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Now she’s finally getting around to touring behind “Girlfriend” and her third consecutive No. 1 album, “Best Damn Thing.”

Question: “Best Damn Thing” came out last April. Do you have any second thoughts about not going on tour right away and keeping fans waiting for almost a year?

Answer: I think it could have gone either way. I think it probably didn’t really matter that much. You always have to do promo (promotion). I did promo all of 2007, I had to go to so many different places, including Asia, Europe and South America. I had a lot of places to go, a lot of TV shows to do, and a lot of shoots and all that stuff. It has to be done if you want to work a record really hard, and I chose to work this one hard.

Just who is Avril Lavigne? Her Best Damned Tour attempts to answer that question

March 8th, 2008 admin

Avril Lavigne started as if she meant business, kicking off her GM Place show Friday night with 'Girlfriend.'

She made her first album at 17, her third when she was 23. In between were the ages of 18-22, the prime years of identity crisis (and, significantly, the time when schizophrenia strikes). She’s come through that passage a married woman and still earthbound star.

So then who is ?

Her Best Damned Tour, which stopped at GM Place on Friday night, suggests a few clues. She started as though she meant business with “Girlfriend,” surrounded by four dancers and a five-piece band, on a stage that lit up in pink with images of skulls and crossbones. The singers and dancers added a visual dimension to the show but not much else. If the songs on the new album are mechanical, then in concert they have more character, even if the band is anonymous.
