Janet Jackson: Discipline

April 21st, 2008 admin

Janet Jackson

is a legend. She can work with whomever she likes; she can get the hottest producers for her album; and she has performed all over the world. With that being said, it’s disappointing to see her compete with newcomers like Beyonce, Spears and Ciara, because somehow, someway, she feels as if in order for her to properly compete with them she needs to completely alter her musical style. For someone who hasn’t been in the business as long as Janet, and hasn’t built her own style and does not have a platform of loyal fans, this change may be suitable. However, with the new album, Discipline, Janet decided she was going to go techno. That was a big no-no.

What Discipline provides is the same soft-voiced Janet over loud music, but this time, the music is not even the usual R&B sound, which can be tolerated with her voice. It is more of a techno/synthesized/rave-ready vibe. Not fitting for an R&B Queen like Janet. Then there are the interludes where she talks to some computer pet or robot. What is probably supposed to sound futuristic and boundary-pushing comes off as Janet trying to hard to do something different.

Janet Jackson has Discipline

April 2nd, 2008 admin

Janet Jackson

Worldwide 100 million-selling megastar returns in a massive way with her new album Discipline, the 10th studio album (and overall 13th album) of Jackson’s career.

Janet discusses the unlikely topic of Discipline, the title of her new album, the reason it was titled as such and the impact Discipline has had in her life.

“Discipline has been much on my mind,” she says. “It’s the idea that unifies the songs on this record. As a concept, and even a lifestyle, discipline goes extremely deep. It can be applied to so much about ourselves. In my case, I see it as one of defining aspects of my character. Discipline was there for me from the start. But it was not until this record that I began to understand its full meaning.

In addition to Rodney Jerkins, who produced the albums debut single, “Feedback,” the new album brings together an A-list of guest producers, including Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Tricky Stewart, and The-Dream.

Music DVD Review: Janet Jackson - Live in Hawaii (Re-Release)

April 2nd, 2008 admin

Janet Jackson

’s Live in Hawaii is a sizzling scorcher of a concert that was first released on DVD in September of 2002. Filmed at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, the concert was the last stop on Janet’s 2001 All for You tour and featured songs from most of her albums. HBO originally aired the show, which was a ratings dynamo as watched by over 12 million households. Now, Eagle Rock Entertainment is re-releasing the concert DVD for fans that may not have caught it the first time around.

The sales of the All for You album were around two-million copies, representing a drop-off from previous albums. Nevertheless, the title song was a considerable hit on radio and Janet’s popularity continued to be unquestionable. The apparent disappointment of The Velvet Rope tour was still fresh on the minds of most critics as the All for You tour began.
It was initially slated to be an international excursion, but after the events of September 11 the majority of the intercontinental leg was cancelled. Janet did do four Japanese dates in January of 2002 before returning to the United States for the rest of the tour. The Honolulu show found on the DVD is from February 16, 2002.
