Is Madonna to blame for the increase in the number of children languishing in European orphanges?
New statistics from England’s University of Liverpool, published by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering, show that the Material Girl’s high-profile adoption of 2-year-old Malawian boy David Banda has prompted a surge in international adoptions at the expense of local orphans, Showbizspy reports.
And to think young David wasn’t even an orphan!
According to this adoption pattern - dubbed the “Madonna effect” - kids living in institutions in European Union countries are being passed over in favor of international adoptions at an alarming rate.
International adoption, FYI, should only be used as a last resort after all means of fostering, adoption and care within the child’s country of origin are exhausted, according to the terms of the UN Convention of Rights of the Child.
But thanks to the pop star’s trendsetting power, potential parents are opting to adopt healthy, white children from abroad rather than kids in their own country who are mainly from ethnic minorities.
